A Word to the Wise!

The most valuable training tool you have is your daily interaction with your dog. Nothing can replace a good foundation and connection between the two of you, starting at home. This has little to do with how much you love your dog. I’m talking about the quality of your everyday, moment to moment relationship.

When you have a clear two-way communication with any family member, it is likely that the relationship will be a fundamentally good one. Any issues that arise between you will be much easier to fix. Why would it be any different for you and your dog?

Here are a few tips for you …

Observe
Step into your dog’s world for a day! Watch them! Really observe the messages they are giving you.  Even take your video camera out and watch in slow motion later. Learn their language, and always respond to them with calm energy, gentle contact, and support. When trying to find this special connection, you can’t be on your phone, talking to someone else, or distracted – you will surely miss some valuable opportunities to get to know your dog.

Respect the Signals
Your pet needs to know that you will protect and support him at every moment. If they need some distance from people or situations, give them that distance. Don’t force them into a dog park if he’s telling you he doesn’t feel safe.  That time may come … or it may not.  Not every child likes the swings!  Respect what their telling you at all times. Know their language and trust it. They don’t lie!

Leave Your Ego at Home
Let’s get real. Do you get embarrassed when he misbehaves in front of others? Are you concerned about being judged? Why? Who cares. Your first job is to ensure your dog’s wellbeing. He goes home with you. They don’t.
